While visiting Savannah, Georgia, my husband and I stopped by this restaurant for a drink with a coastal view. Looking in the direction of the entry, away from the water, the light coming through the windows created a lot of interest and reflected onto the shiny bar top. The silhouette of the receptionist added tremendously to the scene.

The Paris map is painted on heavy watercolor paper with acrylic, genuine gold leaf with bronze, gold and silver paints. The background was created with a multitude of glazed layers to create an almost leather-like tooled texture. The ‘houses’ were painted with metallic paints.

While traveling in Cape Porpoise, Maine, this lighthouse glowed with the approaching storm. The low tide aided the composition and allows the viewer to enter the painting. Using oil on the art media board added an interesting texture to the water.

Driving in the Tuscan hills from Volpaio to Panzano, it had been overcast but the sun came out very briefly, and I was able to capture this moment where the sun was casting very long shadows from the magnificent, almost black, Italian cypress trees.

Parisian sunsets can vary considerably and many are quite dramatic as is this one. They are magical! Many thin, glazed layers were used to achieve the glow of the sunset. Simplifying the large shape of the backlit Parisian architecture created a great contrast to enhance the glowing sky.

After a lovely evening in Cortona, Tuscany, while dining outside overlooking the plaza below and everyone at the table had departed, the white linen tablecloth was hit by the glow of the light from the bottles of wine and glasses. It seemed to say, ‘It was a great evening.’

Paris abounds with painted, historical glass shop windows. Sadly, they are becoming a lost art but many still remain even today as many are historically preserved. They tell the story of Paris. By simplifying the background reflections, I created a backdrop for the genuine gold-leafed painting to give it the illusion that it is on the glass.

The composition on Pont Royal Reflections is telling you about the shapes the reflections created from the buildings. When you really study them, you will see the reflections are the Louvre. By cutting off most of the buildings at the top, I was able to draw you to the shapes of the reflections. Although a limited palette, many impressionistic colors were used within the simple shapes to achieve the stone textures.

Charleston architecture is often with white-trimmed, painted wood. This scene of a traditional building with white flowers was a great study in painting whites. Whites do have color and an artist must learn to see the variations to record it properly for their viewer.

The light was the theme of this painting. The challenge was to invite the viewer to share the feeling of the light on the vines and the stones, yet retain the individual textures whether they were in the light or shadow. Watercolor painted on art media board helps to enhance some of the textures.

In Savannah on Bull Street, an old, historical building creates interesting light patterns with beautiful railings. This was a second-story balcony and the single light that was on created a glow inviting you in to discover what was inside. Many who pass this probably miss it because it is above eye level but my head is often looking up!

This was painted with a Plein-air group in one of the member’s lovely gardens. A well-known artist herself, her garden was a palette of lovely colors and it was easy to find a great composition. Watercolors on aquaboard enable the artist to frame without glass or mat after archival varnishing it.

The coastal city of Charleston has a lot of history. Many of the homes are tucked behind ‘palisades’ or walls that make you wonder what lies on the other side. In this case, the flowers were peaking over the railing adding even more texture which played against the stone textures.

Montepulciano is a well-known Medieval and Renaissance hilltop town in Tuscany. One climbs to the very top via numerous shops and restaurants. Montepulciano is known worldwide for its wine. I was drawn to this scene by the shadows that visually take you underneath the arches and to the distant village beyond.

I had taken a photo of this bridge, Pont Saint-Michel, on a sunny day with lots of greens and blue sky. It was lovely, but what caught my eye was the shadow on the bridge; the old worn stones had many colors in them and the reflections at that moment helped to create a visual path into the painting.

Count them, there are really six bridges in this scene. This large painting was created with many impressionistic strokes of various colors to emulate the colors found on the old, worn stones and bridges. One must constantly think value, not color, to paint in this manner. The old saying is so true — ‘Value does the work and color gets the credit’.

Palmetto trees are abundantly found in the Carolinas. The shadows cast helped to create this composition. This painting was accepted into the 2015 ‘Carolinas Got Art Juried Exhibition’ — a juried exhibition open to North and South Carolina artists. Only 100 entries were accepted into the show.

I have always wanted to paint the striking, gold statues on the Pont Alexander III Bridge in Paris, but the light was never correct. On this special evening, the golden sun was setting and it was creating deep, reflective shadows and colors on the statues and many colors in the sky. Adding just a bit of genuine gold leaf to the painting was a final touch to express my feelings.

The Place des Vosges in the Marais area is the oldest planned square in Paris. The park area is surrounded on all four sides of the square by retail shops and the typical three-story Parisian buildings. Painting the foliage at the top helped me to frame the composition and give you the feeling you are under the arcade.

As one enters a dark archway in the Louvre Plaza in Paris, the diamond-shaped glass Louvre Pyramid suddenly appears in front of you. The backlit group of people were casting strong shadow shapes and offered good contrast for the subtle colors on the glass pyramid.

It is fairly peaceful to sit on a Tuscan villa patio in Cortona, Italy, watching the sun go down while sipping a glass of Chianti. I was doing just that while teaching a painting workshop in Tuscany. Suddenly, the sky turned a warm yellow creating a reddish glow on the trees yet leaving the foreground a cool blueish-purple. Capturing the fleeting moment is what this painting is about.

The rolling Tuscan countryside has these typical Tuscan scenes almost around every turn. For this small painting, I wanted to try a new painting technique. First, I painted the panel with rust gesso, then scratched the surface slightly to create a texture. After it was dry, I painted this scene with acrylic on top of the textured base.

Pont au Double is a very small bridge on the Seine River in Paris that many miss seeing. To achieve this soft glow, the painting was first painted in watercolor and then the light highlights were added in pastel over the dark shapes in watercolor.

Sitting on the banks of the Seine while soaking in the sun is a Parisian pastime. The quays allow the visitors to walk along the river and often these trees on the quays create wonderful shadows as seen from the water. Using a limited palette and Impressionistic brushstrokes helped me to create a mood that was inspiring me.

The textures from years of wear on this very old, grand, Venetian pot attracted me; even the lichen growing on it added to its appeal. To enhance the feeling and scale of the pot, I left the stairs in the background and column in the painting but painted them only as a lighter background.

In Kennebunkport, Maine, suddenly the fog came up and enveloped everything but the dory boats. Many glazed layers were used to create this glow of the fog. If you mix yellow, red, and blue on your palette, you just get grey, but if you glaze each color separately, you can achieve a marvelous glow.

I spotted these reflections while walking near the Piazzo Navona in Rome, Italy. The scene looked so typically Italian to me. The glass door, opposite, was being reflected onto the wall; it was actually curved. The viewer must determine what is a reflection versus the textures on the wall.

Take the Batobus in Paris on the Seine River - a wonderful way for tourists to tour the museums and other highlights from the water. You can purchase a pass that allows you to hop on and off the ship all day long. In this scene, the sun was going down behind the L’Isle de la Cité and another magical Parisian sunset.

One often enters the Jardin du Palais Royale through a small entry that suddenly opens up to a huge garden. Deciding to paint a large square painting of the scene enabled me to concentrate on the lovely building textures and design. The gold-leafed gate-posts at the entrance to the Café help to welcome the viewer. Reflections on the window give you the sense there is a garden behind them.

In Panzano, while staying at Villa le Barone, high on a hilltop above Florence, this view was just down the road. It inspired me because of the various textures - one of my favorite painting styles to do. When painting this in watercolor, I must do a lot of ‘negative painting’ as watercolor must always go light to dark and few corrections can be made.
